:ciao:

Have you more informations about this munition ?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_cruiser_Almirante_Oquendo

A large (and very heavy) brass shell casing that was taken as a Spanish-American War trophy from the wreck of the Spanish cruiser “Oquendo”, which was destroyed by the United States Navy at the naval battle of Santiago in Cuba. The shell casing is approximately 29 1/2 inches tall (
(749,3 mm)
, with a diameter on the bottom of approximately 7 5/8 inches (19.5 centimeters). The upper section of the shell casing is beautifully engraved in script writing on 8 lines:
“Taken from the Wreck of the Spanish Cruiser ‘Oquendo’ of Cervera’s Fleet destroyed at the Battle of Santiago July 3rd 1898”
Origin From griffinmilitaria

According to that wikipaedia article, this ship had two 280mm guns .
So this case at 195mm rim is too small for them.
Also listed are ten 140mm guns.
So that is/was not a common calibre...
I had a Japanese 140x551R x173 case that i traded years ago.
And there are a few more listed in Jan Janssens' book, including a Spanish 140x1246R
1890s but rim diameter only 175mm ...so that also doesn't fit.
Would be interested to know more about this case...

That article states that the 140mm gun had a bagged charge.
It seems that the case did not, in fact, come from that ship

Very long round.
Perhaps that is the 140x1246R x175
Still doesn't fit the original souvenir case, even were it cut down.
Unless, of course, the given dimensions are mistaken....
A continuing and interesting mystery

The Gonzalez Hontoria indeed used cases according my references, but not a normal case but a 2 piece case and I do not know how it looks as I have never seen this case..

If I look for the rim diameter of 195 mm there are not many options and 2 cases actually fit the length reasonably:
1) 152,4x743R195 for the Italian 15,2 cm C da 152/32 Model 1890/1891
2) 152x743R196 for the Japanese 15 cm L/40 Type 41 Meiji
