Unidentified container

I picked this up at W&P's and there seemed to be a few doted about on several stalls,I think I found the best one with clear markings and the lid which the others all had missing, now the million dollar question is can anyone identify what it contained ? It looks like a projectile or mortar .

Any light shed on this would be appreciated.

Dimensions are 80mm internal Dia and overall length 220mm ,it looks British but who knows ?
