It looks familiar but it has me stumped. Anyone have any ideas?

it reminds me of some british smoke/gas grens that had a perforated can inside a normal sized gren body with a gap all round to allow the contents to burn a lot faster than normal. maybe the us had something similar?

not totally sure that the fuze is for that grenade. The side profile, to me, looks slightly Dutch but I can't find anything that matches.
 
Any chance this is out of the Picatinny Museum holdings? They had a number of odd U.S. experimentals from the 1950s with odd bodies.
 
I don't believe so. I'm still trying to pin down where the item was recovered.
 
The Brits had a grenade that was for chucking in the sea to alert Frogmen. Your grenade looks a bit like one.
