Unknown Projectile

Been looking for information for this one for a while now.
It measures roughly 138-140mm at the ogive and 680mm~ long.
My best guess is some sort of 140mm or 5.5 inch Naval Projectile.
Looks to be APC or APCBC.
Stamp on the base reads 43 41

We X-Rayed it but our machine was unable to penetrate the thick steel.I
f anyone has any leads, it would be appreciated.

Cheers.

As you said, probably a 5.5 inch. It's APCBC style and could very well have an internal bursting charge. I'm thinking you need to find someone with a cobalt source x-ray. Some of the large welding inspection companies have the more powerful x-rays.

Hazord is right. At our company welds up to 10cm thick are x rayed with ease. Try to find a NDT inspection company in your vincinity. There must be one in your vincinity
Meanwhile I am looking in my archives; I know I have it somewhere but I cannot find the right PDF.

Regards, DJH

Removed the base plate. It was empty.
Still wondering for curiosity sake what weapons system this projectile is from.
If anyone has any ideas let me know.

not the same but it has the same design:

Hi,

I could be wrong, but it may a French SAP / AP projectile used with one of the following naval guns :

138mm/45 Models 1929 / 1934 : http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNFR_55-45_m1929.htm
138mm/40 Model 1927 : http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNFR_55-40_m1927.htm
138mm/40 Model 1923 : http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNFR_55-40_m1923.htm

You might want to check if the dimensions of your projectile match those of the AP Model 1924 ("obus de perforation à fausse ogive") depicted below :

Hope this helps.

Kind regards.

Matt.

Hello,
from my source french 138mm shells have different base plate and driving bands.
best regards

I agree with pzgr40 - take it to a NDT if your machine won't work, they will be able to get you some really good pictures. I used a NDT service and they were very careful and competent. I'd stay with it while being X rayed.
