Unusual 6 Pr Hotchkiss shell?

Darkman

Well-Known Member
This 6 Pr Hotchkiss appears to have been made into a lamp with the top of the shell being cut, drilled and tapped for a light fitting. But what’s going on with the base of the shell? Was there an open base-eject shell or has this been a standard common pointed shell with the bottom turned out? I don’t see why it would be necessary to do this as the normal hole for the base fuze would be adequate for lamp wiring. Any help appreciated, as I have the opportunity to buy it if it’s something a bit interesting.

Thanks, Graeme

Looks like a shell that has been machined out from the base, can only tell by looking up inside the body for machining marks or a step to indicate the true internal dia. before machining. Maybe done like this to ensure empty for nosy parkers?

I agree with the above, even though it makes little sence. As there are no markings on the case, or none visible
in the image. Repairing the projectile would be not likely worthwhile and never likely satisfactory if you buy it
use it as a lamp, might as well if the cost is low. Then it's just a matter of a tastefull base and fittings and ought to
look quite nice and brighten your day ~
