Enclosed are pictures of an early WWI French gas grenade. I have been told a glass ball full of gas was in the center of the metal plates. Anyhow I think it's unusual and the only one I have seen.
You don't see many real Bertrand grenades. They are easy to fake and the majority going around are probably reproductions. Yes they had a sealed glass container in the middle. The glass broke easily and if a soldier had some in his pocket and dived for cover they would just as likely break in his pocket. Not popular.
