A mortar with your address on it!

The close follow-up to the XM-1156 GPS Precision Guidance Kit for U.S. 155mm HE projectiles, is the XM-395 APMI (Accelerated Precision Mortar Initiative) upgrade MGK (Mortar Guidance Kit) to standard U.S. 120mm HE mortar projectiles. The MGK requires a GPS guidance fuze that has 90% of the same parts as the 155mm GPS unit, plus an extended folding tail fin for added stability. I located this under mortars instead of fuzing, due to the need for factory modification of the complete round. It isn't just a simple fuze change as is done with the XM-1156 155mm system. The mortar body needs to have the original fin removed and replaced (these are usually cemented on), and it needs to have the explosive machined out to increase the depth of the fuze well for the new deeper intrusion guidance fuze.

First used in the Middle East in March of 2011, mortar projectiles are falling within 10 meters of their targets, with the first round hitting within 13 feet.

If you want more info from the Internet google XM-395 APMI. Originally XM-395 was a number given to a laser guided mortar development titled PGMM (precision Guided Mortar Munition). If you don't use the APMI you will end up with info about the PGMM which was dropped. The military decided to go with a GPS guided unit, since the enemy was typically hiding behind obstacles, which prevented Laser light from illuminating the proper location.
