British L48 and L67 baton gun variants

There is not a ‘normal’ price for the L3 series of baton rounds, or for most other variants of baton round either. You might find one at a fair for £20 or get in a bidding war at auction and pay £100. It depends on condition, date, variant, and also on the prices other buyers are willing to pay.

There are a lot of NI based collectors that will pay top money for anything that is ‘troubles’ related. In a Belfast auction on Wednesday two loose AEP batons had hammer prices of £100 and £160, that is absolutely crazy!

eBay happens to be where a lot of these collectors look for items and that competition pushes the prices up. eBay fees also mean that sellers have to try to get high prices to cover all their costs and make a profit.

There are a lot of collectors that incorrectly think that the L3 and L5 series of baton rounds have pointed rubber bullets, so ones with the correct flat ended PVC batons can sometimes be cheaper than ones that someone has put an L2A2 rubber bullet into.

Incidentally, the seller of that L3A1 is a member on here, and the ordnance items he sells are generally top condition.

The XL48E1 was a Pistol, Pyrotechnic, No.4 Mk.1/1 modified by the addition of a smoothbore barrel extension, barrel stop, sights, and T shaped steel shoulder stock.

December 1974, the RIOT GUN, 1 1/2 IN, XL48E1 was redesignated, RIOT GUN, 1 1/2 IN, L48A1.

January 1982, the RIOT GUN, 1 1/2 IN, L48A1, had the barrel modified. The modification lengthened the chamber to accept the parallel cased L5A4 baton round. The guns thus modified were redesignated, RIOT GUN, 1 1/2 IN, L48A2.

This information taken from relevant EMERs, explains the difference between the XL48E1, L48A1, and L48A2, baton guns.

January 1982, the RIOT GUN, 1 1/2 IN, L48A1, had the barrel modified. The modification lengthened the chamber to accept the parallel cased L5A4 baton round. The guns thus modified were redesignated, RIOT GUN, 1 1/2 IN, L48A2.

From EMERs we know that the L48A1 smoothbore baton guns modified in 1982 to use the new L5A4 baton rounds were re-designated as L48A2.

In the absence of EMERs relevant to the L67 series baton guns, it would seem logical that the L67A1 rifled baton guns that were being used with L5A3 baton rounds would also have to be modified in 1982 in order to be used with the new L5A4 baton rounds, and that it was this chamber modification that changed their designation to L67A2.

The photos of that L67A1 have been on their site for several months, at least since August, possibly longer.
Helston have, or had, others that they deactivate to order, but they do not change the photos.
It’s the same situation with the Federal riot gun that they have listed.
The good thing about Helston is that they are genuine L67A1, not one of the fakes that were put together by another dealer several years ago.
