Cutaway model of a Russian 115mm smooth bore OF-18 High explosive tank shell as used in the U-5TS 2A20 main gun of the T62 tank. The shell body is made of steel and has an aluminum tail with four fins screwed to its base.
Vo. Of the projectile Is 750 mtrs/sec
Weight of the projectile is 17,86 Kg
Weight of the explosive charge (trotyl) is 2,8 kg
Length of complete cartridge : 1062mm
Length of projectile : 647mm
The projectile is fuzed with the W-429E impact fuze, which is either superquick, either has a short delay that can be set by rotating the screw on the side of the fuze 90 degrees.
The steel shellcase is galvanized and has an electrical activated primer in the base. The shellcase is filled with powdersticks , locked up by means of cartboard spacers on top. A roll of lead wire, acting as decoppering agent is placed between the two spacers on top of the main powder charge.
With the newer T-64 tank, the shellcase was replaced with a seperatly loaded shellcase for the automatic loader. The main gun was than redesignated U-5TS 2A21. The 115 mm calibre remained.
