Cutaway model of a German manufactured 12cm Wurfgranate 42 (WGr.42) mortar shell as used in the 12cm Granatwerfer 42 (GrW.42).
The Granatwerfer 42 was a direct copy of the Russian 12cm Model 38 heavy mortar. Many were captured by the German troops after the invasion of Russia, and taken into service as the 12cm Gr.W.378 (r). The weapon made a great impression on the German troops, as it outclassed everything they had themselves as where it came to range and impact.
Soon, the Germans copied the weapon , known as the 12cm Gr.W.42, as well as the ammunition.
Both German manufactured and captured Russian shells can be fired from the weapon.

This German shell is fuzed with the WGr.Z 38 (st). Below the fuze, the booster charge Gr. ZdLdg. C/98 Nitropenta is placed.

Data:
Range of the shell:
Minimal : 300 mtr (328 yards)
Maximum : 6025 mtr (6591 yards)
Weight of the shell: 15,8 kg
Explosives weight : 2,78 kg FP02 (TNT)
Length of projectile (with WGr.Z 38 ) : 680mm.

Six augmental charges can be added to reach the maximum range.
Regretfully the initial propelling charge in the tail is missing.

Hi Chris, thanks.
Groet, DJH
