It is not unusual for a .22 adapter to be off center. This allows a centrally located firing pin to hit the rim of the cartridge. As to the lack of rifling, that is a mystery.
Thanks. I looked at the .22 hole more carefully, it has circular lines, but they seem to be drilling lines, not classic slowly rotating lines, they are too circular and too many of them. Would not the projectile just tumble when it exists this adapter in a large 12 gauge barrel?
There was a game, years ago, that allowed for indoor skeet shooting. Using .22 shot shells (aka - rat shot). There were guns manufactured that were smoothbore .22 made specifically for the sport. Maybe this is an adapter for converting ones shotgun in order to compete, saving the expense of buying a new gun.
