Fired Common Pointed projectile which measures 243mm long with a diameter of 76.2mm. The driving band is 27mm wide with a date '5 98' on the body. I'm thinking it is for the BL 12-pounder 6 cwt gun, but I've only seen this in shrapnel never Common Pointed. Can someone please confirm the identification? Thoughts appreciated... Many thanks.

Hi I think what you have is a common pointed steel projectile the same as this for the 12lb 12cwt naval gun I believe they where known as the long 12 but I could be wrong as I am far from an expert this version is a mkiv and is 300mm long
+/_mm dated 10 /1901 filled 23/09/1902 going by the full date at the top also has a nice 1901 dated converted fuze to plug hope this maybe helped wg
