18-Pdr stampings

Hi all,

Recently acquired an 18-Pdr shrapnel shell body. The stampings on it are:-
SD7168
QF 18 PR
IX
F S
N E Co.
19 3 1918
G H

Below the driving band is stamped GH AA1 /|\[in C].

OK, so I am assuming this is a Mk IX shell made in 1918 in Canada (from the "Broad Arrow" in C mark), but who is the maker "N E Co."? And what is the significance of the GH stamp and the AA1?

NE Co. - Northern Electric Company
GH - Possibly an examier's stamp - due you have an image?
AA1 - N/K - "

I'm guessing that the SD number is related to the drawing design (SD = service drawing?) of the shell.

Thanks for that Ammotechxt. The SD number was off-set slightly from the other stampings, which were all centred on a common axis, so presumably was done as a seperate operation. Will try & post a photo soon.

Hi All, Herewith picture of body after original thick gold(!) paint removed; 2nd picture is after my repaint (with stampings shown in white pencil), and 3rd pic is stamps below driving band.
