18 Pndr headtstamp maker code G*C

Can anyone tell me the maker of a 1918 dated 18 pndr shell case marked G*C? The * is a "squashed" double eliptical circle as shown in the image, if you can make it out.

A quick google turns up that the Gramophone Company of London was a large ordnance contactor in both WW1 and WW2 and was better later known as HMV using Nipper the dog as the logo....
 
These were made in Hayes, Middlesex, which is only a few miles away from where I live.
 
I checked out the location on googlemaps and I would have been close by there numerous times. In and out of London on the M4 and also Heathrow.
