2 Pdr projectile?

Hi all,

Recently acquired the projectile shown. It looks like a 2-pdr AP/T shot, but I have never seen one with a base that unscrews like this. There are no markings on it, except for B J 5 stamped on the edge of the base. On the opposite side is another stamp, which is illegible; - it might be the letter "k", but could equally be a symbol of some sort, but it is too blurred to be clear.

This proj weighs 2 lbs 5.25 ozs (or 1058grams) on my kitchen scales.
OAL 5.162"
Dia. in front of band is 1.558"
Dia. behind band 1.565"
Dia. of unscrewed base 0.988", and its thickness is 0.242"
Dia. of hole therein is 0.28"
Depth of recess in base is 0.299", and the depth of the tracer cavity is 1.817"

The crimping groove seems to be in the same place as other 2-Pdr AP projectiles I have.

I have seen one other similar proj, on which the stamps on the base read B R 3, with again an indecipherable stamp diametrically opposite.

Can anyone tell me what these are, please? Trials? Design mock-ups? Early AP? I see no point in having a base that unscrews like this, certainly none of the other AP/T projs I have seen have this base.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Roger,as far as im aware its one of the earlier mks of AP,I have a cast iron AP practice with the same design,as you are probably aware the final mks of service AP had the stemmed cavity but there are various mks with differing base cavity. I guess the trace compound was as per later in the central cavity and the space under the plug was filled with an intermediary to ignite the trace. Hopefully attached is a pic of an AP mk3 shot same as yours with the large cavity but no plug. My guess is Mk2 AP. Thats my thought for what its worth.not a common item whatever!View attachment 92022
