I have been reliably informed that a 2pr case cut up like this (4 cuts) was
capped and used to fire off depth charges. Is this so ~

I have seen the same case in a navy museum in Denmark, and I have a bunch of other weird British cases with cuts and so on like this one.....Would love to have some documents on the subject!

One I traded a couple years back was marked 9.5 in D.C.T. (Depth Charge Thrower), as identified by Tim G.

It would be nice to see some information as to why the cuts and how they looked unfired etc.

Gordon,I have never seen one like that, and I have a fair few cases! What is the headstamp? All the 9.5DCT cases I have are 158mm,other than that I have the short cases with the tapered mouth, which were fired from the top with the primer hole being blanked off, cheers tig

Here are two of them. One had 3 20mms soldered to it.

Been watching this unfold as I've never seen cases cut like that. Only 1 of the above is DCT. but I've not got a case marked just with DCT either, mine are 2Pr & 9.5in DCT .

Although the cutouts are different compared to other naval carts, would they not serve the same purpose ? To facilitate the "closing wad"?

The closing tabs are much smaller on most cases, but I'm sure I've seen these strange 2 pdrs elsewhere. Age and memory loss is getting the better of me!Tig

There seem to be quite a few around, too many for a home made ashtray kind of work up ?
Stenciling might have replaced stamping and that is lost.

A picture of the cutouts. This one is unbent. The cutouts are identical.

Just found this reference to a D.C.T.http://www.bocn.co.uk/vbforum/threads/74079-2-Pr-Blank. I think the one from that post has been cut just below the cutouts, I think a measurement to the bottom of your cutouts will show this.
I also find that the Hedgehog is a spigot mortar style which has an integral propelling charge which uses a small/shorter cart. Some are of a short two piece design cartridge. Half stays with the depth charge and the other half expels during firing/launching.
For some reason this seems a small cartridge for a 9.5 Thornycroft depth charge projector but it is the only 9.5 inch afaik. I also read that there was a breech adapter used to facilitate a smaller cartridge used to fire a lightweight practice depth charge on some models of expansion chamber style mortars such as the Thornycroft and Mark 5 K-guns etc. The normal propelling carts for these tend to be 3 inch carts and modified 77 mm and 3" 20 cwt Mk V cases.
There is an Ord Data 5318 and FTP 223 which details Impulse Cartridges for the Mark 6 and British Mk 7 projectors but I can not find this anywhere. This is all I can come up with for now. Maybe someone else can add a little more light on the subject.

9.5inDCT1.JPG9.5inDCT 2.JPG9.5inDCT 3.jpgHi all,
Acquired the above cases a short while ago at a Militaria fair. If I had not previously seen this thread I would have ignored them as some-one's idea of trench art. Both clearly marked as being 9.5 in DCT, and both have the No.12 primer with the magazine. Two interesting items for the collection!

Roger.
