20mm Hispano Projectile ID

Cronic

New Member
I have acquired a couple of 20mm Hispano Cases marked 1953 RG with SAPIR IZ around the rim next to the extractor groove. They both came with these repainted (I can see brush marks and it's pretty un-even) shiny red projectiles. I was trying to figure out if they actually are SAPI rounds, but after cracking one open it doesn't really look like any of the internal pictures I can find of any Hispano or Oerlikon projectiles. The projectile tip is marked JAP, and it has this aluminum rod that was clearly packed into some white substance. It has no other markings that I can see. Ideally I'd like to restore them to realistic colours if I can figure out what it is.

Hi Cronin, it’s a semi armour piercing incendiary representative round. Weighted to simulate the SAP/I round. See attached for colour in British service

You beat me to reply. Yes it is a SAPIR as stated above but looks like somebody painted it the wrong colour code like a SAPI which has a white tip.
I show the original reply I put on the IAA forum comparing both rounds.
