3" 20cwt HE Projectile WW1

Hello again all,

I have a WW1 3"20cwt HE Anti Aircraft projectile and am after some information regarding what colour and markings etc. Am I right in presuming that even as an AA shell it would still be mustard yellow as per all HE ww1 shells?
Also what colour bands would it have had round it other than a red 'filled' band? And what might have been stencilled on it? Hogs book and my copy of treatise on ammunition don't seem to help so hopefully someone out there can.

Thankyou in advance,

Ben.

The one I had was a Shrapnel

I presume you have a 13 pdr projectile that fits the necked down 18 pdr case.

Or a 13 pdr HE which would be rarer I suspect

Hi, thanks for the reply. It is a HE shell which came with a 3"20cwt case and it fits perfectly. I believe later in the war a standard projectile was produced for the 13pdr, the 12pdr12cwt and both the 3"20cwt and 3"5cwt so the HE shell I have should fit any of those cases? the one I have is in a 3"20cwt case so I'm refering to it as that.

Anybody any info regarding colour and markings?

Hi
He Shell QF 3in; 20 & 5cwt; 12 & 13 Pr are typical AA shell and the same shell
Fitted with night tracer or not.
Shell is yellow with the red typical ring near the top and ring for typical HE filling and also AA black letters under the ring on the body.
fuze is N80/44, 80B/44 (With 44/80 or N11 adapter) or N185.
You can found Shrapnel shells an AZ Shells for this case

Thankyou :)

Hi Doctor,

thankyou for your reply, that's what I wanted to know, your a star :)

I'll post some pics when i've got it painted up

So far...

Hi,

Here's the shell so far, I'm not sure where to put the 'AA' bit? The one pictured in Hog's purple book doesn't have the 'AA' marking :tinysmile_hmm_t2:

For scale the shells to the right are 18pdr's. And on another matter, does anyone know what the 'KH' is that's stamped on the driving band?

Great find, have you seen the 3 inch anti-aircraft gun at Woolwich Arsenal? Should have some photos of it somewhere if not. They looked superb mounted on the back of a Peerless lorry, I know someone with a Peerless but unfortunately don't think they have a 3inch gun!

Hi
in the book "Explanatory list of service" 1918 it's notified that: PlateVII,
AA on reverse for shell used as Anti-Aircraft purposes
AA ( large letters) and monogram of filling station and on the other side for example
T for tracer, Nfuze (44/80), green band and N of method of filling
Here are typical stancilled marks with paint on the body
