3.7 inch Tampeon ? / Tampion

I was wondering if anyone else has come across something similar? And which part of the gun was it protecting?

A 3.7 inch case, cut down to 203 mm, over stamped "TAMPEON I"

I have one the same. They were used to seal the chamber to allow washing the bore. It's mentioned in the handbook.

According to Cassell's New English Dictionary of 1949 - tampion
"a stopper for the mouth of a gun" or "a stopper for the top of an organ-pipe"

My case had the same length, I also had a 4 inch GUN VI TAMPEON, also 203 mm in length.
