3 Pounder Cartridge case base

AE501

HONOURED MEMBER RIP
Yesterday (17th June) a case was in the members stream, but I was looking at it late on and did not note who it was.
As I remember the stampings were: 3 Pr IV 1932 and the usual markings for a normal case of the time. It was an RL case.
The only difference was that there were two abnormal little markings at about 4 o clock and 7 o clock. One or both of these were barred out. I think it was mentioned that the case may have been shortened.

I believe the additional marks were the subject of the ID question.

The 4 o clock marking is a laboratory marking and the 7 o clock marking is a special laboratory marking.

Royal Laboratory must have had a test/trial purpose for this case and once they were finished doing whatever they did it was no longer required so the test/trial markings were barred out. If it has been shortened professionally, this may have been part of the operation, otherwise it may have been butchered by someone else before you had it.

In view of the age of the case, the gun being long gone and paper records likewise you will never find out and it would be difficult if not impossible for you to do so even if the records existed.

I used to work with this organisation, but not in it in my second life.
