30 X 172 GAU 8 wing test rounds

Attached are a couple of photographs of Gau 8 wing test rounds.
They consist of plastic sabots containing a selection of cubes of metal or metal balls.
I'm assuming they were fired at the wings of aircraft to see how they coped with it. Has anyone got any further information about these rounds.
All INERT, come to bits etc.
