.303 hunting round

At the moment these 2 shot cartridges are offered on an auction.

They have, as you see British military head stamp.
Is this a kind of WW2 home made hunting round?

Looks very much like a DIY job. Very oddly shaped. Never seen it before (and probably never will).

Agree it is some kind of DIY job, possibly wrapping paper round a .303 case to make it fit a .410 shotgun?

There was an experimental .303 shot load for jungle survival but it is in a much shorter case than that and was not paper wrapped.

Beyond that I cannot help.

Would tend to agree with the home made shot round for a .410 weapon. Many thousands of service rifles were converted to shotguns. We regularly see SMLE's and Mauser model 98's in .410 calibre.

I have read accounts by ex servicemen who would use blanks with an ounce or so of shot down the barrel of their SMLE as a makeshift shotgun for getting some extra food in the form of rabbits or game bird while on field exercises. Not sure if they use the grenade launching blanks or just noise blanks.
These could be an easier to use version - although thinking about it they wouldnt fit the chamber of a standard 303.
I suppose I would go for the 410 idea, either in converted or standard firearms.
