What function does "safety (split) ring" item 3 in picture D perform? To me it appears NOT to allow percussion pellet to slide towards the firing pin and thus NOT to impale itself on the firing pin UNTIL the inertia of hitting the target exceeds the friction between the safety ring and percussion pellet.
P.S. I did find "VSM" on the outer surface of the firing pin
You are correct, the split sleeve holds the percussion element back until the projectile hits, then inertia
overcomes the resistance of the sleeve and the percussion element goes forward onto the fixed firing
pin.
