If you were the lucky winner make sure you look after the magnesium as if the air gets to it, it will go white and crumble.
There's a restored one here on ebay that shows what the core is like
The projectile had a hardened steel core with steel tip and base and an external body made of Mg. The 'MS' confirms that this is a re-used WW1 case. All components are totally inert.
