4-INCH MORTAR

Looks like a 4-INCH Mortar body turned into a bomb. Any ideas on this one?

Why not just a 4-inch mortar? I see no means of suspension, and the fins are not a far stretch from the 6-inch Newton. Looks about the same era.

I bounced around the net and couldn't find anything that had that type of fin design within the mortars. They remind me of the incendiary fins on the German subs. I thought maybe something experimental?

Concurring with US-Subs, there was what was described as a 4-inch Newton vaned bomb used in some of Newton's early mortar developments. The attached might be of interest as it mentions disposal of various mortar rounds, including 25 4-inch vaned bombs, at Porton Down in 1919.

I started digging more on that as well. I noticed there are some references to vaned 4-INCH stokes as well.
