4 inch shell casing?

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone can tell me more about this shell casing. The diameter of the open end is 10.2 cm which is indeed 4 inch, the lenght of the casing is 52 cm (20.47 inch). I have attached pics of the markings on the base below. I would like to know if by who and where it was made, the meaning of the small stamps, and for what gun it would have been. I suspect it's British/Commonwealth but I couldn't find any trace of a Broad Arrow stamp.

The dimensions that you give are for a 4 in Mk IV fixed ammunition British Navy case. The monogram is COW - Coventry Ordnance Works - and the CF is for Cordite full charge. The other stampings are most likely inspectors marks.

Hi Darrel,

thanks for your reply. As requested, here are some photo's of the whole case. The ruler is in cm. Perspective is a bit off but overall lenght is 52 cm.

As there are no broad arrows, could the E stand for export?

I am wondering if it was a case made on contract for a foreign customer.
