I have a 40mm Bofors projectile that reads 40MM ADL followed by plenty of numbers and letters.

Any idea of the age and use of this projectile?
 
No paint, however years ago it may have been red primer.

40MM ADL 100001 -2838653B - SFM87G 001- 052A -marked upside down on the rotating band.
 
Seems your's was made by "ASTRO DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY INC" and "SOLAR FLAME INC" (wonder what the second one did, maybe the rotating band?)
