I have had this version for years and have yet to find any definitive information on it. The paint is well worn off unfortunately, but the lower white band is certainly evident. There are remnants of the yellow band just below the ogive and another white band on the ogive.

You mighty contact the guys that sell the cd copys of ordanace manuals,I can,t get to there business name right at the moment,( I think it is CSS or something like that
The way the story go,s his great uncle started a ammuniction plant in the mid to early 1800,s, ( might be Smitt and Rubbin )something like that.You can search on e-bay or gunbroker or specialty auctions,just type in artillery,or something like that.I beleive the great nephfew was real involed in collecting and researghing the knee mortar round.Sorry about the brain damage short term memerry loss on the name,you have probably meet and done bussiness with him.

Don't go down that road of contacting that shark that vinnyw talks about. He pirates other peoples PDFs and hocks them off. He tried selling some of the PDF's that I produced so ended up having a run in with him. Eventually he backed off.

Appreciate the responses. I have had dealings with CSS long before the internet and his method of doing business has been the same all of those years. He has left a trail of hate and discontent worldwide it seems. Luckily there aren't many bad apples in the ordnance collecting field and one appears the name gets pretty well disseminated. I am not that deep into the Japanese ordnance so I will pass on the book, but thanks for the offer. The little thing will sit on the cabinet and be one of several "unknowns" I have.

Hi Bob,

Well, there's no need for it to remain an 'unknown'. In itself, it looks all the way like the common Type 89 HE knee mortar round, painted in the so-called "old style" colour scheme (white band = hard steel, yellow band = HE filled), and it's fuzed with the Type 88 Small Instantaneous fuze. I think you're not getting many replies as there wasn't a very specific question in your post; I too was wondering what it was you'd like to know precisely. ;)
Now.. this is what I can tell from the shown picture, but if you show a close-up of the markings on the side of the knee mortar round and the fuze, I can tell you at which arsenal they were manufactured and in what month + year.
Note: my avatar shows a sectioned specimen.

By all means let me (us) know if there's more info you'd like to know about it....

PS: 'CSS' is actually 'CSAEOD'. Amd yes, his reputation precedes him....:O
 
Thanks Olafo. You are right, I never actually ask the question I wanted the answer to!!! Appreciate your information. I know that CSAEOD is the actual code he uses. Irritates the *#+@ out of me because I don't think he ever served a day in the military and he certainly was never in the EOD program. He wouldn't last a day there! Bob
