57mm M86

Who can help me on a cutaway drawing of an US 57mm M86 APHE projectile? I want to know whta the explosive charge above the M27 base fuze looks like. Especially if there is a booster placed in the charge and what it looks like if there is one. This to correctly finnish a citaway model.

A quick look shows I have these two sectional diagrams.


M86 round. To quote the reference where this is from "The 0.094 pound of bursting charge consists of 0.018 pound of tetryl to facilitate the detonation of 0.076 pound of Explosive 'D'.".


M86 projectile. All dimensions in calibres, but what 'exact' calibre I don't know? If you can find the US Ordnance Ammunition drawing, the M86 is covered by drawing numbers 75-2-320 and 75-2-323. The projectile sectional diagram is based on one of these two drawings.

From the text there's a layer of tetryl after the M72 base fuze's output, then after that the Explosive D main charge. Detonative output wise, the M72 only has a No. 26 primer, and a M17 detonator within it, hence the layer of tetryl.



I don't know if there are gaskets/spacers present, nor if the charges are present within pre-pressed containers, such as paper or cardboard.

The US 75-2-320 and 75-2-323 numbered ordnance drawings would probably tell you all the details you want to know, but I don't have these.

You wrote M27 base fuze, but I assume you mean M72.

There is an explosive D and tetryl pellet bursting charge in the cavity of the APC-T, M86.
Also the old Dutch manual TIM (my holy bible) is very clear if you read the text of the M72 fuze. There is a booster charge /gaine above the fuze in the bursting charge.

Will look for a proper drawing for you. You can reed Dutch, so no problem to read the Dutch attachments.
