I picked up this early Nordenfelt 6 Pr shell recently. It’s stamped N88 but I don’t know if that means a model/patent of 1888 or is a manufacture year. Similar 1.5” Nordenfelt shells (which are reasonably common here in Australia) are all stamped N89 - and they were used post 1900 - so I’m inclined to think it’s a model year. I think it unlikely we purchased such a large batch initially that the original rounds were still being fired in the early 1900s.
I already had a nice spare Nordenfelt case (fitted with the long primer) and base fuze, so I was looking to make up a complete cartridge. However I found that the base fuze was 12 TPI but the thread in the shell was 14 TPI. So does anyone know what mark of Nordenfelt base fuze had 14 TPI and when they changed to 12 TPI the same as Hotchkiss? I haven’t been able to find any drawings or documentation.
Also I don’t understand why the later 12 TPI base fuze is still stamped “N” when Maxim bought out Nordenfelt in 1888. “Nordenfelt” guns were still in use post 1900 (even after Vickers - VSM - bought Maxim-Nordenfelt in 1897), but cases I have from pre1900 are stamped with the MN symbol and from around 1900 with VSM.
Anyway, I’m after a 14 TPI “N” stamped base fuze if anyone has one available. Or even a Hotchkiss type if they made them in 14 TPI. Please get in touch.
Thanks, Graeme
