60mm Illuminating Shell M83, Color question.

I have recently bought a 60mm M83 Ill. Shell. The fuze is dated 43. All of the finish has been removed and I would like to repaint it. My question is what color? Some of the references say gray with black lettering and others white with black lettering. What is proper for WWII?
