70 years ago .... night of 13/14th June 1943 - Grimsby raid

HONOURED MEMBER RIP
70 YEARS AGO....
Shortly after 1.30 am on the 14th June 1943 Grimsby was attacked by the Luftwaffe, dropping butterfly bombs in large numbers over the town. The story of the raid has been published in various books since. Many people were killed and injured and lots of acts of bravery were carried out by the Bomb Diposal personnel sent in to clear up the town in the coming weeks.

looking at the height of uncut grass and the foliage on trees/hedges and indeed crops in fields at this time of year, it is easy to see just how the butterfly bombs were so hard to spot. Butterfly bombs were indeed dropped over a wide area of Grimsby, Cleethorpes and the rural area of Great Coates.

You'll have to get out and about and speak to some of the people who were in the raid. Imagine that, a first hand account from someone who was there.

I'm sure there are still one or two "not found" examples just waiting to rear their ugly heads...

I've talked to a couple of people who were witness to the Blitz on Liverpool, and even to this day, they recall the horror
of those dark days.
