A pic from NZDF press release, of an 8inch disappearing gun unearthed (appeared?) in Wellington ,NZ, last week.
This was from an old fort site and the guns were placed there to defend against a Russian invasion in the late 1800's.
The site is about to be restored and the hopefully the gun, once preserved ,will be resited.

Kind of amazing that it was still there. There was such a paranoia for steel in WWII that everything that wasn't tied down in the U.S. was melted, including the Big Bertha gun they had from WWI.

I wonder if some prac. proj 's & non lethal accoutrements were also buried around there? Out with the metal detectors boys!

Good luck.

Ozzi.

Might be a bit late for that type of activity, though i have heard some of the later constructed walls of the Fort had various sized, obselete shells embedded in the cement.

Nice thing to find. If the disappearing mount is complete then its a rare find indeed. Keep us posted on progress Bob. Tig.
