I believe there were more aluminium plugs and fillers made than brass but they just didnt survive in the ground and hence there seem to be more brass ones about. Therefore they are less common than the brass ones. Dont try and remove it if its ok as you wont be able to do so without mullering it completely. A chemical rection with the gren body makes it almost impossible to remove without a great deal of care and effort and usually involves a hot spanner.

hi .thanks for the info .when i got the grenade someone had aready gone to town on it with a screwdriver and messed it up bigtime..theres a pic of it on the thread . .MILLS NO 5 PULL RING ?..going to have one made to replace it.looks like i will have to drill the old one out:tinysmile_angry_t:. thanks Darrol.

Ime sure there are No 5/23 aluminium fillers on SA & Feebay. Save a lot of bother getting one of these and they are pretty good too and cheap.

Well no joy on alloy filler for no 5/23.they have lots of brass ones and filler plugs in alloy for 36.looks like im having one made me thinks.whats the difference between a number 5and a 23 besides base plug ? Thanks . . Darrol

Hi Darrol,

try item no 220718668175 on ebay. There is a 5/23 filler on sale right now.

A No 23/1 base plug will either be made from brass or iron, a solid plug, marked 23/1.
A 23/11 plug will be iron and look like a sort of wing nut, same for the 23/111.

Have a good look at Millsbombers website where all varieties will be shown.

hi andy. will check out ebay thanks.:tinysmile_shy_t:.my question was not about the base plug but the grenade body itself .i have a mills with the wrong base plug .its a no 23 could be a no 5 body.the plug was for a 23 mk 3 so its the wrong one for that body .just needed to know what differences there is between a number 5 and 23 bodys to make sure i get the right parts for that body .the striker is a 36 but center tube is no 5/23 as is the leaver. would put a pic up but my camera died:tinysmile_angry_t:.thank you very much for youre help.regards Darrol.

Sorry Darrol,

the No 5 and 23 1/11 are the same only the 23/111 and 36 are different, again, check out the Millsgrenade website and all will be revealed.

Andy

cheers andy. dont need to check now .you have given me the answer :tinysmile_hmm_t:.do have another question if you dont mind? what filling did a single white line around the body represent ?.thank you. Darrol.

It would not originally been white but pink. I expect its just faded over the years. A pink band, 1/2 in wide would have signified it was filled with either ammonal, alumatol or bellite.

cheers andy .going to check fieabay now:tinysmile_fatgrin_t.thanks again.Darrol

Mills Band Colours

There may be a white banded Mills but most ones I've seen are pink bands that fade out to white after a long time in certain conditions . Green bands can also turn to blue .

heres a pic of the new filler:bigsmile: and the 23 111 base plug .took two hours to upload .bloody dongle:tinysmile_twink_t2:
