Who know the difference between the Bomb Smoke M.L. for the 2-inch Bomb Thrower that was mounted in A.F.V.’s and the Bomb Smoke M.L. for the 2-inch mortar? Is that only the markings and the contents of the cartridge in the tail?
The Bomb Thrower ammunition was marked 2" BT I or 2" B.T. 1/L. and have a cartridge in the tail with 18 grains ballistite B.16. The cartridge could also been filled with 18 grains 81 mm Hercules mortar powder. They could be fired with the British Bomb Thrower Mk I* and the American "mortar" M3 as used in Sherman tanks.
Am I correct that the Bomb Smoke (filled with HC) for the 2-inch mortar had a cartridge in the tail 55 grains ballistite B.16 and could therefore only be fired with the Bomb Thrower Mk IA* and Mk II and the US mortar M3 because they all have a adjustable gas release valve in the chamber. Therefore could these 3 models also fire the 2-inch bursting smoke (WP) round that was used in the British 2 inch mortar.
