I got this Besa round, the yellow primer ring seems to indicate a proof round? I thought all the proof rounds where marked with a 'Q'. Maybe it is just a ball round and someone has been messing around with yellow paint?
No, it is not a proof round, but a Ballistic Standard.
These were made to higher tolerances and were the rounds against which every batch manufactured were proofed at the factory. The Ballistic Standard rounds were heated to a specified temperature and then the charge of the new batch was regulated to give the same ballistics as the Standard round. They can be found in all calibres.
Proof rounds tend to have a clearer yellow cap annulus.
Another one to look out for is a round with a green cap annulus which is not an AP. These are Factory Daily Proof and are fired against the Standard rounds to ensure everything is to specification. They are rarely encountered because they never leave the factory.
Here are a couple of labels for Ballistic Standards. The label in the centre is for BESA Standards.
