Bittersweet find

I bought the attached base of a 75 mm shell because it was interesting (and cheap). It was pretty heavily corroded and I took a wire brush to it to get the rust off. I found, under the corrosion, that it was inscribed

VICTORY
NOV. 11, 1918


Anyway, I find things relating to WW1 pretty sad and this sorta made me sad.
