Brit L56A1 prac gren

Am I right in thinking this was developed so that a live fuze could be used for training to make a 'bang' and hitherto its introduction throwing practice was done with the weighted L-series prac grens which were completely inert?

Did the L56 then completely supersede the L2 prac grens? I guess the body and finish of the earlier weighted grens would better represent the live L2 for practice...

There was only the L56A1, and no A2, A3 etc right?
