Does anyone know what type of explosive was used in British 1 Pounders dating from around 1900? Was it blackpowder or something else?

Yes as far as I was aware the 1pdr's (as well as 2,3 & 6pdr's) were filled with gunpowder,

1 Pdr. filling

Filling of the 1 Pdr. shell is 270 grains of FG gunpowder.
