British flare or shotgun case?

Pictured is a case that I have not come across before, made by Eley of London. I suspect it is far too big for a shotgun and the material is very thin which points towards a flare case. Dimensions are length 84mm, rim 43mm and mouth 40mm. Pictured alongside a German 25mm flare case from WW1 for comparison. Any ideas?

Hi,

I am pretty sure that this is a punt-gun case. It looks a bit short for that, so probably has either been cut down, or had a longer body made of card. I have a specimen (somewhere!) which is about 8 or 9 inches long, and has a blue card body, with an internal thin-brass re-inforce at the bottom. The primer is a .32 revolver blank.

Regards,
Roger.

Thanks Roger, I think that you are on the right path. On the inside of the case could be the remains of a cardboard lining that as you suggest may have extended well beyond the brass section. Best attempt at a photo below!

My WW1 Flare Cartridge, many have said punt gun cartridge but when i say show me the gun every one draws a blank, there is a flare gun just need to track down a pic, think it is very much like the line throwing launcher for Navy.

Another possibility is a Whaling harpoon firing cartridge, but it may be a bit short,I was told Eley made these.
Just another thought on this.
Tim.
