Case Identification Request

Gentlemen - identification please... Brass case without primer measuring 122x257R with headstamps '120M/M N /|\ VSM CF 6/14 T'. The last image shows the inside of the case mouth (with 50P coin scale) to show the internal circumferential rings so I don't think that the case has been cut down. I'm thinking British contract to the Japanese Navy but I'd appreciate your thoughts on identification/weapon please.

Hello,
I have no cases with your data. Please look at mouth, or make a pic, is the wall thick?
I suspect it could be cutted.

In my list, all the jap cases have a large rim diameter
best regards

No , I don't think it is cut. The wall thickness at the case mouth is 1mm.

The width of the rim is 7mm so the diameter of the case at the front edge of the rim is 144-14=130mm

Hope this helps!

The only 120mm with 144mm rim I know if is a Dutch 120mm L/40 (that case measures 681mm). But I do not expect your case is for that gun.

From the stampings, it looks as though this was accepted for RN service, and fired with a full charge.

I have seen an almost exactly similar case to this (in a friend's collection), with the same stampings and no primer, but it was only 251mm long overall. I would be very interested to know what gun it was used in.

Roger.

Thank you. That looks a real possibility. Dates, markings and calibre ID all match. Just need to confirm the case length now... I have attached another couple of images of the case fitted with a Primer, Electric, Large, Mark III which screwed in very easily once the case threads had been cleaned.

Hello,
the link show ammo was fixed. If so case must have crimping signs or not?
regards

Crimp marks would be expected - unless this is an unloaded case or the round was a 'push-fit' rather than being crimped. The case does show internal circumferential ring marks suggesting it has not been cut down. ydnum303 reported the existence of a similar case which is 6mm shorter than this one. We really need to know the actual case length and unfortunately this case type is not mentioned in any of my references including the Hawkinson Case Length Guide. Yet another enigma maybe...
