Converted 12 PR 12 CWT case, shortened to 85X189R. Notches in mouth and holes in side wall. Remarked No 3 1936 ] I N FR.
Torpedo/depth charge or aircraft catapult launching cartridge?
Hi, Can anyone tell me if the notches on this shell case are part of the original design, or some kind of trench art? Any more information about the manufacturer would be much appreciated! Thanks in anticipation. Gary
I have the same cartridge case also dated 1935. No 3 11N with the side slots but has an electric primer No 14E VN. Yours may have been replaced.
Mine has case print on the side and had remains of a white paper mouth seal. A tape is threaded through the slots to keep the charge against the primer but is missing.
Case print is: Cordite RMC 4416 23 1/2 oz Mk1 PMD 1. 44 rest is unreadable.
It is a catapult cartridge to lauch aircraft.
I will wait till daylight if you need any photos.
I have two examples. One with the mouth cut-outs and one without cut-outs at the mouth.
First is like the one shown above. The no cut-outs is 82 x 190R (86mm outside mouth diameter) so there can be dimension differences.
The notes mention an 8" steel case but I wonder what case this is? I have a 6" brass case.
It mentions the tape through the slots and is the only reference I have about catapult cartridges. Sadly no mention of converted 12Pr cases .

Photo c. Side and mouth view showing paper & glue remains plus poor case print.
Photo d. Case with no mouth cut-outs. The 2 holes serve no purpose? Not drilled through the base.
