...couldn't resist this one today!!

butterfly

HONOURED MEMBER RIP
Well, I don't get to post much on the Grenade section as its not my collecting field as such, but just couldn't resist this one today........... at just over 20

WW1 Mills moneybox -looks like its not seen the light of day for a while, this is just how I got it, haven't even wiped it down as yet, so apologies for it being a little 'dusty'!!

Now perhaps one of the Mills 'experts' could tell me which type of Mills the lever belongs to - I'm a little confused as to wether it is a later type No5 or a No23?
Someone has damaged the alloy filling plug at some time trying to unscrew it, but otherwise it all looks to be in very good condition.

So here are the pics,
regards Kev

Nice item Kev, at least its an official money box, a bit like the ink wells, and not a made up job. Good to see the transfer almost intact and the correct tin base plug too. Well worth the money. Tony.

Hi Kev,

a very nice 'money box' No 5. Has a flat lever, used with later No 5s and some No 23s but mostly the No 23s had ribbed levers which added strength.

There were a lot of No 5s left over from WW1 but i think even nicer with an ally filler. Dont even try to remove it, just wont come out and you will bugger it completely.

Great find and a great price.

Well done.

Andy

Thanks for all the comments guys.
Thanks also to Andy for making things clear on the lever.
kind regards
Kev

Very nice. I had a no 23 that someone had tried to remove, and completely wreck the filling plug. (Why try to get it out, what are people expecting to find?) It was so buggered I ended up drilling it out and replacing it. Worked fine but a hassle.
Can't really tell from your pics but it appears that the cast lines haven't been ground down? Is this the case or just bad light?
Cheers

Nice find Kev. She is a beauty. Great price too. There are still bargains to be had if you have the patience...Best....Dano

Thanks Dano, sometimes its just luck, being in the right place at the right time....it was just one of those that I couldn't resist being in such good condition.

pointblank0; I know what you mean about trying to remove the filler plug - in this case, is there really any point?? I guess its just temptation in a lot of cases. I've taken some further pictures so you can see the damage to the plug, not too much and some of the damage could be carefully eliminated. I also took another photo of the side seam for you to see. It is more obvious on one side than the other but definately visible on both sides.

regards Kev

Hi Kev,

here is a pic of my money box. Dosnt have a filler hole drilled, painted black but with the same X on the front with another smaller x and a J on the back. Also has an experimental ringpull and pin set up that was trialed for a while but found to be difficult to use and dangerous as it caused the grens to become hooked up with each other.
Mine has had some of the seams ground off but not all. I think its because if they were seen to need grinding they were done, if not, left alone. Ime sure this was because of the numbers involved and the need to be quick about it.

You have a nice original money box which was made and sold as such.
As i said before, great find.

Andy

Nice grenade moneybox Kev, have you a close up pic of the transfer as i can't quite make it all out or would it have been a label?
Regards

Hi Andy,

This one is now in a friends collection, however he is local to me so next time I go around I will take my camera and take some close up shots for you.
It is a transfer and not a label. I recall seeing a photograph showing a better example than the one I had, not sure if its on bocn or not, will have a look for you.

regards Kev

Thanks Kev, that would be great i am now the owner of an original one myself but its minus the transfer and just wanted to get a clear pic of one
Cheers
