Croatian hand grenades for special purposes produced in Shipyard Split

During war in Croatia in Shipyard in Split (original factory name is Brodograđevna Industrija Split, or BIS) many different types of hand grenades, rockets and landmines were constructed. A group of three engineers was formed and named "PGB tim". PGB was acronym of their names. From 1991 to 1995 those three engineers were constructing and testing tens of experimental hand grenades, rockets, grenade launchers and landmines. After each product was completly tested, it would be approved for mass production in part of Shipyard Split which had been producing diesel engines for ships before the war. Grenade fuzes for all hand grenades made in BIS were produced in Cetinka from Trilj. Cetinka was supplying BIS with grenade fuzes during all time of production. And BIS was supplying Cetinka with plastic and aluminium bodies for pyrotechnical delays for hand grenade detonators.

Some of inventions made by "PGB tim" in Shipyard Split (BIS) were produced in small numbers, for needs of local Croatian army and Special police units. At the request of commanders of local special police unit from Split and 114. brigade of Croatian army from Split "PGB tim" invented four different hand grenades for special purposes, which you can see on my pic below:

From left to right on the first pic:
-PGB RS 04 hand grenade with tear gas-aluminium body, grenade fuze mady by the factory Cetinka, pyrotechnical delay for the fuze made in BIS and tear gas burning mixture improvised and filled in BIS. The grenade has 8 holes on upper cap drilled which were glued with self-adhesive aluminium foil. Totally produced 86 grenades of this type from 1991 to 1993.

-PGB RS 02 illuminating hand grenade-aluminium body, grenade fuze made by the factory Cetinka, pyrotechnical delay for the fuze made in BIS and illuminating mixture made in BIS. Totally produced 36 grenades of this type from 1991 to 1993.

-PGB RD 03 smoke hand grenade-aluminium body, grenade fuze made by the factory Cetinka, pyrotechnical delay for the fuze made in BIS and smoke mixture made in BIS. The grenade has 8 holes on upper cap drilled which were glued with self-adhesive aluminium foil after filling grenade with smoke mixture. Totally produced 164 grenades of this type from 1991 to 1993.

-PGB RB 01 hand grenade with shock effect-plastic body, grenade fuze made by the factory Cetinka, pyrotechnical delay detonator made in BIS and binary chemical compounds for filling made in BIS. This grenade was produced only in 3 pieces, because it showed during testing as very unstable and dangerous. This one from my collection has never been filled with binary chemical compounds, because the production stopped very early so I got just empty body which stayed in BIS machinery after quitting production of this grenade. All conjuctions between plastic body parts of this grenade were sealed with epoxy.

All four types are extremly rare so I am very happy that now they are part of my collection

Goran, great info!

Do you know which manufacturer code they have been using on their grenades?

Here the factory:
http://www.brodosplit.hr/
They have been using PGB manufacturer code. But that code was just stamped on their TNT packages in paper foil which were used for their fragmentation grenades and landmines.

Look the link of the factory below, there are pics from Brodosplit museum, you can see the same grenades in their museum in the last row, third pic from the left:

goran_croatia, that first picture and on the far left (red grenade) is that for launch by an SKS or a model 70 AK?

By the way, I almost ended up there back during the war.

No, PGB RB 01 (red grenade) on the first picture is not for launch by AK. It was made to be thrown in the same manner as german M24 from ww2. The upper part of the grenade( grey plastic pipe) is like the handle during throwing.

Goran, thanks again!
Do you have any images showing their code on ammunition related items?

No, I just have their experimental types of bounding mines, I will put them in new topic tomorrow, and also I have some original documentation and technical drawings made by "PGB tim". I have so much in my collection, just give me couple of days to put it here ;)
