French Model 1935 47mm

Hi,

It's a French 47mm Model 1935 tank gun case and I assume it was made in 1939. I was just wondering if someone could fill in what the 'D.4' and 'D' marking means?

Thanks,
Mark

The "D" on the left has to be the manufacturer. I have never seen that mark before. All the other cases I have seen have "ARS" as the manufacturer.

Hello,
I remind the principle of french marks for the Army (it is not the same for the Navy). At 12 o'clock, the calibre, at 6 o'clock 4 things: the manufacturer of the case, the lot number, the year and at least the metal supplier.
On your case, the manufacturer is D: Compagnie du Duralumin de Dives, the metal supplier is also D. D is always his own metal supplier and the one of many others manufacturers. I know one exception: in 1917 on some lots of 75 DEC, D has used brass from the metal supplier R.
As said by M8owner, the cases of 47 Mle 35 are practically always made by ARS. But I know also, and they are a lot rarer, D, as your, LUM and ScBx. These three are from 1939.
Regards,
Dandebur.
