It is very difficult to gauge from your photo, maybe you could give some dimensions, however, it looks like it may be a shell case that has been mounted on a piece of wood, the top of which has been fluted out - trench art style as a vase or similar. The inscription German, may well imply that it is a German case - but without dimensions its hard to say.
How is it fixed to the base?
The German raider Apam was seized in port and many souvenirs made from, pieces taken from it. Most common are 37mm Maxim shells marked with the ships name and date, This looks like a case from a larger gun. German raiders often had 105mm guns and larger. So this may be from a 105, If you unscrew it from the wood base, you might see a head stamp that will confirm this. It is a nice piece of history despite it's money grabbing commercial history.
Thank you. I didn't even know it unscrewed from the base. There are a number of markings on the base. 171, 1905, C/9798, XII, and others. Besides the date what do they mean?
German 37mm.x94R made for the 37mm Maxim auto gun, a scaled up Maxim 7.92R. Used by many navies around the world. Also used in Hotchkiss revolving gun and many single shot quick firing naval guns. Model # C9798. XII=Dec, 171 probably lot #. One example of a round that was made in over a hundred variations and used by by many countries.
There is information about this on the net, one see's all sorts of rounds attributed to this ship which was just a captured merchant ship that was taken to the U.S and then interned. It wasn't even a raider ! Lots of souvenir sales resulted who knows how much was actually from it ~
This is an example of a British projectile for example. It could have been surplus U.S. stock for all one knows.
These show up on ebay and so on every now and again on various mountings and combination's.
