got this very nice original gelignite box at a swapmeet

Do you know why the markings on the ends are orientated differently to the sides?

no,i wondered that myself,maybe the person in the box factory wasnt paying attention that day!
i measured it and it could have gone the other way

I've got a couple of these and they both have the odd ends.
