I was in London Thursday with work, finished early so with time on my hands I had a stroll around the East London market at Spitalfields.
i soon discovered that every Thursday they have a vintage and collectables fair, one stall instantly attracted my attention, an elderly couple, great stall, on it a black cloth lined box containing bomb sprinters and AA shell parts along with a burned tail of a 1.3KG incendiary, I discussed how I was interested, and from a bag behind the stall he pulled out a complete bomb, he advised me that he wanted to sell the lot together, we agreed a price then he spent the next hour telling me about how he collected the bits around the East Ham area of London and about how he and his mum nearly got killed in the Bethnal Green tube station disaster. Very interesting stuff indeed.
well Thurs evening I removed the tail of the incendiary, it's only the rarer version with a bomb gaine screwed into an adaptor then into body of bomb!! Delighted, only seen these in museum and pics on net, a very nasty little bomb indeed.
Was wondering if anyone knew how rare, or how many like this per container?? The stall holder said that he had collected these bits from the streets during the war, and how he did a deal with a local ARP Warden for the complete bomb.
(I did check that all items were inert and contained nothing dangerous) he's also said that there's a shed in his allotments where there is the body of a large German bomb, he says the rear plate is missing and that the bomb was used as a money box during the war to raise money for those that lost a family member. I took his phone number and left, I may be able to buy what he described as a possible SC 250. 2 fuze pockets.
well that's my best find of the last 12 months.
