I am glad I bothered to turn over this 105x93 German 10.5cm case. I have not seen one dated as early as 1899 before, which would indicate it was made for the Model 1898 gun rather than the updated Model 1909 which introduced a barrel recoil system. As far as I can tell the case is identical to the many WW1 dated times we have all seen. The only difference is a series of punch marks around the rim, as pictured (17).
This may just be wear and tear, but they do remind me of the reloading marks found on German WW1 naval cases. The marks do not go all the way around, so I doubt this is attempted trench art! Posted for interest, but glad to have your comments.
