German Navy 6cm Signalwerfer

Can someone tell me about the German Navy 6cm Leuchtgeschoss used in WW2 Signalwerfer. Is it a flare or smoke signal?
I want to know how it is launched and what the mortar/launcher looks like.
I have a poor example of the signal and I can find no references in my books. I also have a copyright photo.
